№ 70 - Finders Keepers by Doug Shipton

Hard to find, hard to resist: the UK label Finders Keepers Records like to keep it catchy and edgy.

For as long as we can remember, the label has been feeding fans of psychedelic, jazz, folk, funk, avant-garde and strange movie muzak with undiscovered vinyl artefacts from the annals of alternative pop history.

Musician, DJ, record producer and graphic designer Andy Votel and obscure vintage record collector, LP compiler and multi-faceted DJ, Doug Shipton, dance in their very own universe to liberate previously unreleased and long forgotten music. To put it in their own words: "With a virtually unblinkered approach to "original" music, Finders Keepers defies and redefines genres from one release to the next, pre-empting record collector trends and re-contextualising music from disparate locations uniting lost music and found artists most of which sound more current and challenging than today’s most experimental heroes.”

As the duo and their friends like to dig deep, they have expanded their trade over the years and launched several sub-labels including "Sounds Of Wonder!", Anatolian Invasion, B-Music, Cache Cache, Cacophonic, Disposable Music and Hypocrite?, who shine a light on the unheard world of library music, new wave, disco, punk, avant-garde-jazz, noise, underrated soundtracks and misunderstood European pop music.

With an artist roster spanning from legends like Atari music composer Suzanne Ciani, Swiss electronic pioneer Bruno Spoerri and Chilean-French film director and composer Alejandro Jodorowsky to contemporary lateral thinkers like Demdike Stare, they all are part of a universe that loves to cater to music enthusiasts, DJs and collectors with lost sounds, even in foreign languages.

In his exclusive mix for EDWIN, Finders Keepers co-founder Doug Shipton plays a selection of ex-Yugoslavian (pre-breakup) psych, funk, disco and new wave music. Be ready for almost 45-minutes of rare, hard to find, upscale communist pop, mixed with a flawless, funky, spiritual attitude!
