Mix 139 - Club Mix

№ 139

Since 2023, the French duo Known Artist has been redefining the edges of club music with nostalgic 1990s style releases, blending early elements of techno, house, breakbeat, and oddball rave textures.

Their tracks are built for dancefloors that groove heavy with playful rhythms and percussive twists and light up peak-time sets and after-hours alike. As the minds behind the label Club Mix, they’ve created a playground for genre-blurring club tools and futuristic sounds, curating releases that challenge convention while keeping bodies moving. One of their standout projects is the vinyl-only Club Remixed series - an underground favourite that pairs original Club Mix releases with bold reinterpretations from a hand-picked circle of remixers like Canadian musician Jex Opolis, Berlin-based DJ and producer Alex Kassian, Australian artist Fantastic Man and British creator Demi Riquisimo, who all flip Known Artist tracks into twisted bass-heavy versions, trippy house rollers, or full-blown warehouse anthems.

Each drop sells out fast, becoming prized finds for collectors who like their records rare and raw. With international tour dates across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Known Artist have earned their place as up-and-coming figures in club culture. Whether they’re behind the decks or behind a new release, their vision is clear: no rules, just pure, high-functioning dancefloor energy. For The EDWIN Music Channel, the duo have created a 70-minute long mix consisting solely of their very own, original productions, featuring a laid-back voyage of 1990s grooves, vocal zones, samples and melodies.

Releasing today across the Known Artist Bandcamp as well as EDWIN Stores and online, is a limited edition Club Mix T-shirt, which comes along with an exclusive SD Card, featuring everything from CLUBMIX001 to CLUBMIX011. All tracks are Rekord Box ready, so you just have to plug in into your CDJ's and enjoy!

As ever, we spoke to our hosts about their creative operations, discussing their love for the 1990s touch and what the future brings for their Club Mix label and their Known Artist ambitions.

Q. Known Artist have such a mysterious yet striking identity - how do you balance anonymity with personal expression in your work?

A.  “Anonymity” helps us create a space where we can be fully honest. Music speaks louder once the ego has stepped back. It's also very important to us that people connect with an energy, an atmosphere, an emotion, … not a face.

Q. There’s a nostalgic-yet-fresh vibe in your tracks. What eras or sounds most influence your production style?

A. We’re both drawn to the 90s and early 2000s. A kind of nostalgia of our childhood, dancing to some summer compilations, alone in our bedroom. It’s just an idea of dancefloors we were too young to explore.

Q. You release tracks sporadically, without promotion. What’s the reasoning behind that anti-hype approach?

A. We release when there’s something worth releasing. We have started the label for fun, without expectations. The first release was really just a bottle thrown in the ocean. It somehow picked up, so we took that as a signal to keep going. It also didn’t feel right to pay for promotion as we are releasing our tracks for free.

Q. What was the initial vision behind creating your own label, Club Mix?

A. A revival of that cheesy dance sound from the late 90s. We also used a lot of gear from that era, trying to get as close as possible to that aesthetic. We have really tried to trick people into not knowing when these tracks were made.

Q. Your Club Remix serial features vinyl releases, too. How do you choose which tracks and remixers are ready for vinyl and which are not?

A. We try to choose tracks and remixers that bring something timeless, something that earns its place on wax. Something that we would be really excited to show each other if we were bumping into it in a record shop.

Q. Do you see Club Mix evolving into a platform for other artists, or will it always remain a self-contained outlet?

A. For now, it’s a vessel for a specific frequency. With time, we are aiming to create more of a platform. We are taking the time to build the base; we might invite people once we are comfortable with the foundations.

Q. You’ve built a global audience without traditional promotion. What advice would you give to artists pursuing a similar DIY path?

A. Don’t wait, do something, with what’s around you, then design your frame around it. Adjust it along the way.

Q. Why was it important for you to keep everything - from distribution to design - in-house?

A. Labels have a system that feels like a lot of extra work. The process and calendar felt like it was going to take ages. Keeping it in-house also preserves the language of the project. We are simply in full control.

Q. It’s said there’s an “indescribable touch” to your tracks. How would you describe it, if you had to?

A. Something you remember but never actually knew.

Q. From Tokyo to Melbourne, how do your sets adapt to different cities and cultures?

A. Each city has a pulse, a scene, we have to feel it and understand it in just a few hours. We usually prepare something we imagine fits and readjust it according to the energy.

Q. What’s been the most unexpectedly wild or meaningful crowd reaction during a set?

A. It’s always meaningful for us to watch people’s reactions when we finish a track and play it. Even now that our catalogue has grown, the feeling doesn’t fade.

Q. What’s next for Known Artist?

A. To keep cruising! End of July, we have a remix coming for Palms Trax & MYD, then our next CLUB REMIX vinyl should be landing in record shops at the end of summer. So, these are pretty exciting things! We’re also heading to Australia during the winter for a tour, and we will obviously have our little reunion stop in Southeast Asia, like we did the last couple of years.

Q. You seem very intentional with your artwork and design. Do you see fashion and visual art as an extension of music?

A. Absolutely, everything complements each other. There is no record label without visual art, no fashion show without music. Visual art is the very first thing that makes you pick a record or another in a shop. It sets the tone before even listening.

Q. You will release an SD card alongside the t-shirt collab we drop. Can you tell us the story about the SD Card and what is on it?

A. The SD card is like a digital fossil. It’s a funny format, not really used by DJs. Inexpensive, loads fast. We’ve uploaded our discography via Rekordbox on each one of them. It’s just ready to be plugged in. Have fun.

Q. And can you share some insights about the T-shirt design, too?

 A. The design plays with signal distortion and lost transmissions.  There’s a kind of poem written on it, let your feelings figure out the hidden words.

 Q. What are you looking forward to in the near future?

 A. To keep pushing our continuous effort with the label, merging more than sound and visuals. Collaboration outside of these fields will come naturally, we hope. Lately, we’re talking a lot about performance for shows. And we think we have a few ideas that need to be pushed around and tested.
