Mix 146 - DJ Absolutely Shit

№ 146

Just some days ago, DJ Absolutely Shit - the electrified collision of producers and DJs Ruud Whiting (Metrodome) and Christian Wood (Il Bosco) - returned with their most fully realised statement to date: Synthetic Stupidity.

Fashioned in long studio sessions and sharpened by decades of dancefloor experience, the album captures the duo in a rare purple patch - stimulation and creativity unfiltered. Known for their heavy-lidded humour and high-impact sonics, Bosco and Metrodome refine their chaos here without dulling its edge.

Across twelve meticulously engineered tracks, “Synthetic Stupidity” balances the syncopated intricacies of breakbeat science with driving, full-throttle 4/4 momenta, hyped-up vocals, frantic sampling and hooky synth lines, creating a record that moves between club functionality and wild imagination. With renewed clarity and hard-earned confidence, the pair stretch out into more expansive territory. The result is a deeper, more considered body of work - one that brings their personality and history into the world of peak-time immersion.

Released via their own Red Laser Records label in collaboration with EDWIN, the triple LP sets its sights high, aiming to recapture the layered storytelling, texture, and sense of possibility that defined classic dance albums like “Experience” by The Prodigy. Rather than chasing trends or algorithm-friendly formulas, DJ Absolutely Shit leans into craft and character, creating a world listeners can step into, not just a playlist to scroll past.

To celebrate the album, the duo recorded the vibe and their set from last Sunday’s release party at Liverpool’s White Hotel club for their EDWIN MUSIC CHANNEL mix. As ever, we spoke to our hosts. Read below what DJ Absolutely Shit revealed about their new album and its genesis.

Q. “Synthetic Stupidity” has such an intriguing title - what inspired that name, and what concept were you exploring with this album?

A. It’s partly our love of humour in dance music… something we felt has been missing for a while. Everyone takes things too seriously.
It’s also a poke at people using AI to churn out endless tunes. For us, the most fun part is making tracks out of dust, hands-on creativity and collaboration.

Q. Can you walk us through your creative process for this record? How did the initial ideas evolve into the final tracks?

A. We’re DJs at heart, so we get together, spin old records, stop and sample something that grabs us, and build from there. Sometimes we just get sick of drum programming, melodies, and sound design. We never have a full track in mind... It’s more like improvisation: messing with synths, scratches, and silly cartoon/video game samples until it feels right. where it takes us, adding synths and scratches and silly cartoon samples.

Q. How long did it take to complete the album from start to finish?

A.  Around seven to nine months of creating, walking away, and coming back to fine-tune tracks.

Q. What kind of equipment and software did you use while producing “Synthetic Stupidity”?

A.  Loads of sampled records into Ableton. Synths included Korg MS2000, Roland JP8000, UDO Super-6, u-he Diva, TALSampler, GForce Oddity, Operator, Dexed, Glitch 2 and plenty of plugins by Kazrog, D16 and Airwindows. We love iZotope RX for editing and restoration, and their Neutron 5 Multiband Gate for cleaning breakbeats.
We have an Oberheim OB8 and a Memorymoog... the only big difference between emulations and the real OG analogue is that the bloody Memorymoog is a bastard to keep in tune. (Selling those synths if anyone’s interested haha)

Q. Did you experiment with any unconventional tools or techniques during the production?

A. We always try to use gear in ways it wasn’t intended to get unexpected results. Sharing exactly how would be giving away our secrets.

Q. How did your studio setup influence the sound of this album?

A. Every setup shapes the output. The mix of hardware and software drives a huge part of our style. Our studio is all records, decks, and a sampler, so naturally, this became a DJ’s LP.

Q. How would you describe the sound and style of “Synthetic Stupidity” compared to your previous work?

A. We’ve developed our style further. Unlike the last LP, which was a '90s throwback listening album, this one is concise, direct, and harder to categorise while still being us.

Q. Which track do you feel best captures the overall mood or message of the record, and why?

A. Datz Discusting - daft, mega, and very much us.

Q. How do you hope listeners will interpret, experience, or connect with “Synthetic Stupidity”?

A. We want it to be the dance album everyone’s been waiting for.

Q. What does “Synthetic Stupidity” mean to you personally?

A. A journey with friends and a proud achievement for both of us.

Q. If you could describe this album in three words, what would they be?

A. Sausage, Lego, Scrotum.
